Sam Ong Hoo Shrine

Tourist Attraction Cherngtalay, Phuket, Thailand

Sam Ong Hoo Shrine in Cherngtalay is just 15.9 km (or 26 minutes) away from Bismarcks Paradise Phuket luxury villas resort.

Sam Ong Hoo Shrine is one of the oldest Chinese shrines in Phuket and is located in Cherngtalay, Thalang district. The shrine was established in 1901 with the help from a Chinese barber named Pea Ju Pai Tak and is often referred to by locals as Cherngtalay Shrine.

As the number of Chinese expats in Cherngtalay grew due to tin mining opportunities many discussions were had about bringing images of Buddha over from China so the Chinese would have somewhere to worship. Pea Ju Pai Tak, the local barber, volunteered to visit his home town in search of the images. When he returned he brought 3 wooden Chinese Buddha carvings with him. One of the three carvings contained the name “Joo” which was the same as one of the community members named Pae Joo Jew Tee. Upon realizing this Pae Joo Jew Tee donated the land on which the Shrine was built.

The Shrine was built using wooden poles and covered with a thatch roof by locals in the community of Cherngtalay. It was named Abbey of Kim Hui Tian and it is rumored that over 160 relatives have taken part in looking after it.

Sam Ong Hoo Shrine is another local shrine that proudly participates in the Vegetarian Festival celebration with body piercing Masong’s and a colorful parade. Locals often visit this shrine on their own birthday or New Year’s Eve to pray for good health and prosperity through the embodiment of Buddha.
