Food Stalls

Phuket, Thailand

Read Introduction

Traditional food stalls are either a temporary structure, or cart on wheels, that are used to prepare and sell food and beverages to the general public. They are most often found at events or places where large groups gather such as markets and parks. Typically, a food stall will serve food and drink that is native to the area in which it is being sold, although sometimes you will find a few peddling more traditional items such as ice cream, cold drinks or snow cones. Phuket is no different in the sense that the food stalls do peddle food that is native to Phuket such as Pad-Thai and fried rices. They are usually local favorites made from recipes handed down through families. As mentioned above you will find the odd ice cream, cold drink and fruit cart which can be a refreshing treat on a hot day. While the general rule that food stalls will be found in places such as markets, events and festivals and parks does apply in Phuket, you may also find the lone food stall along a small road during the lunch hour, and these are often the ones with the best versions of your favorite Thai food. For those looking for more diversity, when choosing to eat at a food stall, there are certain places around Phuket, such as Kalim Beach, where dozens of these carts gather every evening to feed the masses. Additionally you will find a large grouping of food carts at many of the local markets or pop-up festivals that happen all around the island.
