Phuket Tourist Information Guide
While not a hot-bed of art and artist activity, you can find an art gallery in Phuket – there are a dozen or so of them on the Island of Phuket. Artists represented are typically Thai with an occasional foreigner represented in the galleries. Most galleries are located in the Patong and Surin Beach areas and have regular hours between 9 and 5 pm. If you’re looking for tattoos, you can ask one of the artists if they can create something for you – they don’t all have tattoo guns, but they can almost always create a made-to-order tattoo design according to your specifications. Some of the art gallery locations in Phuket offer art lessons for kids or adults with an interest in learning about drawing, painting, or other styles of art. Even if the service isn’t featured on a price-list, you can feel free to ask staff whether art lessons are available. Learn to paint at an art gallery in Phuket in watercolor, oil, charcoal, or draw in pencil, pen, or markers. This may be a generalization, but over the years we’ve come to realize that Thai artists are exceptionally skilled at duplicating paintings, photos, or scenes from one medium to another. If you would like to commission an art piece from an artist at one of the galleries below, it can usually be done – and the artists are happy to oblige. Landscapes, figures, portraits, animals, cars, homes or businesses are all common subjects. All that is usually required to get started is a very clear (in-focus) photograph – in a size as large as possible. Or, if you’re looking for a quick art idea, you can buy paint for t-shirts and create your own – ideal for a family project. Painting supplies like crayons, calligraphy brushes, airbrush supplies, paint brushes, watercolors, oils, acrylic, pens of every sort, clay, canvas and specialty papers, and frames can all be purchased at a large art gallery in Phuket.
